5. Article about the history of Beaumont's (aka Belter's) Island Resort and tavern on Stone Lake. 1904-1960 - The island was best know for the tavern where there was plenty of entertainment. Customers needed to ring the bell for the launch to pick them up from the mainland. Previous owners were Ed McGuire (1904), a boys camp, Koerner's, Doriots (Cedar Lake Lodge- ca 1916), and Hungers Cedar Lodge Resort (ca 1926-1931).

9. Charles & Catherine Doriot's Cedar Lodge (aka Clear Lodge) on Stone Lake. ca 1908-1917 - The resort was located on Belter's/Beaumont's island. Doriot shuttered the resort from 1917-1920 and purchased Deer Park Lodge. The resort was listed as Stone Lake Resort on a 1918 Outer's magazine map. Gus Koerner purchased the property from Doriot in 1920. Included is an excerpt from John LaFave's memoirs about a brawl at the resort between Louie LaPorte and George Devine.

10. Easement on Channel road securing access to Kersten and Langum properties on Rest Lake. 1958-1959 - The roadway property was changing ownership from the Estate of Marian Seward Neal Gibson to C.A. Pedderson, agent for C.R. Robbel. Realtor George Walliser was engaged to secure the easement. Langum's owned the island and a small mainland parcel; Minna Staar Kersten owned a parcel on the mainland which she purchased in 1950.

11. Floating Island Poses Problems at Manitowish; 40 Boats Needed to Remove It 8/2/1964 - The island on Rest Lake has floated loose as a result of heavy rains and high winds eight times since 1940. Residents hope to relocate and anchor it on the northeast corner of the lake.

12. "Hanson, DNR criticized for controversial removal of 'floating island'"- by Eric Johnson, reporter for The Lakeland Times 4/2008 - The Rest Lake floating island was removed via excavator in February 2008. The Wisconsin DNR approved the permit submitted by Town Chairman John Hanson. Area residents and Town Board Supervisors felt the removal was not properly discussed and decided prior to the action.

16. Images of Gurdon Hubbard Hamilton's fishing trip to Deer Park Lodge. September 1918 - Gurdon( of Oak Park, IL) and brother George arrived at the Powell depot, traveled to Deer Park Lodge (most likely by wagon and then boat launch), fished the chain of lakes and departed from the Rice Creek rail station. These are the fishing photos showing the lakes flooded with timber at the time. See Related Records for other photos from this trip.

John Albert (Bert) Cagney Sr. on his dock on Island Lake. 1958 - An observation from Bert Sr.'s grandson Jim Cagney: The tree line across the lake shows a perfect stand of early seral (poplar, birch, maple and red oak) trees. As the last slash fire in this area was in the 1930s, all the trees in this image are the same age, about thirty years old and 50' tall. In 2020, the canopy is now punctured with 100' pines above the 70' deciduous canopy creating a sawtooth tree line. Interesting forest progression. Jim recalls driving that Johnson Seahorse 7 1/2 hp outboard motor.
