  1. "Birching in the Big Woods". The author recounts a 70 mile birch bark canoe route from the Land O' Lakes area to the railroad depot in Manitowish WI, passing through the Manitowish chain of lakes. 1890 - A series of four articles in Shields Magazine,written by G.O. Shields, titled "Birching in the Big Woods, detailing the author's October 1890 Northwoods fishing and hunting trip via birch bark canoe with guide E.M. Clark. The 70 mile wilderness water route started in the Land O' Lakes area and passed through Boulder Junction, Presque Isle and Manitowish Waters. The author writes about staying at a logging camp below the Rest Lake dam on their way down the Manitowish River to the train depot in Manitowish, WI. The articles discuss camping, hunting and the hardships of such an endeavor in 1890.

  2. "Down Plunkett Road" by John Bates 1992 - The article talks about the Plunkett family homesteading along the Manitowish River from the mid 1880s - about the 1940s. Plunkett road has since become part of the bicycle trail from Manitowish Waters to Mercer.

  3. "E.M. Griffith and the Early Story of Wisconsin Forestry" written by Fred Wilson, forest ranger at the Trout Lake ranger station. (1903-1915) - A personal account by Fred G. Wilson, forest ranger at the Trout Lake Ranger station from 1911-1952, recording the life, vision and works of his superior E.M. Griffith, Wisconsin's first state forester. It was published in 1982 but covers the time period 1903-1915.

  4. "Elevators For Fish" by Duane H. Kipp- an article in Field & Stream magazine 4/1932 - The article discusses the negative impact dams have on fish migration and resulting sports fishing. Several types of fish ladders had been tried unsuccessfully in the state. However, a new invention, the Barr Fish Elevator is being tried at the Rest Lake dam.

  5. "Engineer's Error By Which Michigan Lost & Wisconsin Gained Part of Iron Range" 11/27/1914 - Capt. T.J. Cram selected the wrong terminus for establishing the boundary line between the two states. The result was Wisconsin gained 600 square miles of mineral rich territory. This line was disputed for many years. A Norway pine tree with a blaze from this surveyor's expedition was found along the shore of Trout Lake.

The article discusses Papoose Lake, Big Lake and the Ojibwa harvesting wild rice on Rice Creek. 1895 - A story of a fishing trip to Presque Isle Lake in August 1895. The group also fished Papoose Lake and Big Lake, noting the harvesting of wild rice in Rice Creek by the Ojibwa.

  8. "How Fur is Caught" 1894. A 5 part series chronicling fur trapping with Fay Buck in the Circle Lily and Turtle Lake areas. - A series of articles written by E. Hough for Forest and Stream, a weekly New York publication, titled "How Fur is Caught". The articles detail Hough's February 1894 journey accompanying pioneer and trapper Fay Buck running his fur trapping line in the Circle Lily and Turtle Lake areas. The last article includes his tales of joining Joe Blair of Plum Lake on the running of his trap line.

"In the Heart of the Wild Woods" is a two part article recounting the author's adventurous hunting trip on Big Lake and the surrounding area with guides Peter Vance and Joe LaVigne. 1899 - Two articles titled "In the Heart of the Wild Woods" and published in the January 1900 edition of Forest and Stream magazine, recounting the author's adventurous deer hunting trip in the Big and Clear Lake area in late October 1899. The guides for the trip were Peter Vance and Joe LaVigne.

  10. "Old towns now gone: Buswell typifies old northern towns" by Alan G. Barbia 1992 - This article discusses the lumber town of Buswell on Papoose Lake (1895-1910). It also mentions the towns of Fosterville, Winegar, Presque Isle, Winchester and Oxley as well as the push to sell logged land for farming purposes.

  11. "The Barr Fishway- A Brief Description of the Only Successful Fishway Known Today" 1931 - This booklet discusses and illustrates the fishway invented by Harry Barr, from Ironwood Michigan, which was installed at the Rest Lake Dam. Also attached is a schematic diagram of the patented lock.
