Harry and Alvena talk about their time owning Harry's Super Market in the Manitowish Waters/Boulder Junction area. He retired January 28, 1998 when the store was sold. He owned the store from 1957-1998. Harry also discusses his experiences with transporting eyes for the Lion's Eye Bank, his time hunting, fishing, trapping, and even dancing. 2. Bad Jim's tavern with a young Lloyd LaPorte in the picture. ca <1910 - The tavern, possibly the first in our area, was owned by Jim McKinney and purportedly was located on what would later become the Ilg property on Rest Lake. News clippings referred to Jim as "from Manitowish dam". Included in the record is Rosetta Plunkett Wysocki's recollections of Jim and the tavern as well as Jim's obituary.

4. Betzer's Alder Lake Resort. Includes photos, advertisements, brochure, obituary for Ray Betzer and brief history of the property. ca 1937-1970 - Ray Betzer purchased the property from Robert Loveless and originally advertised it as "Cottages in the Pine Woods". After his death in 1970 Ray's sister Evelyn Ethel inherited the property. Dan Fox helped her manage it from 1974- early 1980s. In July 1986 the property was sold to former guests Dick and Muriel Henske and was converted to private residences.

6. Bunn's Northwoods Lodge on Little Star Lake. 1952-1976 - Walter & Beatrice Bunn purchased the resort from the Sindberg's. Walter's obituary is included in this record.

7. Chain-O'-Lakes Lodge on Alder Lake. 1938-1944 - Owned by Mr. & Mrs. Edmund Kmentt of Chicago, IL until 1944 when sold to Mr. & Mrs. Edward Scotten, also from Chicago. The property name was then changed to Alderwood Lodge. Kmentts stayed active in the community and continued to live on Alder Lake. They opened Lakeland Sporting Goods retail shop in the late 1940s.

10. Christensen's Alderwood family compound on Alder Lake. 1948-1988 - Floyd & Baye Christensen and George and Lucille Speas, all from Necedah, WI, purchased the resort in 1948, to use as a vacation location for family and friends. After a few years Speas sold their interest to Christensens. Floyd's three children each had use of one of the three cabins. Floyd and Baye used the lodge as their 3 season residence. After their son Roger built his own summer home on Alder Lake, the Bayview cabin was rented to select friends. After Floyd and Baye passed the property was sold in 1988 to Bartling's Manitowish Cranberry Co.and was once again operated as a seasonal resort.

11. Clear Lake Grocery 1958-1968 - Owned by Sam & Dorothy Ogle from Madison, WI. Linked is a newspaper article talking about Sam's career. It indicates they only operated the grocery for two years. Classified for sale ads in 1964 and 1968 list Ogle as the seller. Dan and Leah (Perkins) Losby moved to town in 1957; Leah's obiturary states they ran the grocery for many years. (Possibly for Ogles?)

13. Documentation regarding Carl "Bud" Camp owning and marketing the property on the peninsula across from the marina on Spider Lake (Spider Circle). 1978 - This property was originally part of Buck's and Koerner's Spider Lake Resort before being subdivided into residential property after it was sold by Rudolph Kuper some time in the 1960s. This peninsula was also home to Kuper's Lodge-O-Lakes summer camps and Sidney Hill Boys Camp in the late 1950s.

14. Dr. E.R.Perkins,semi-retired dentist and longtime summer resident on Rest Lake, aggressively pursued the construction of a planned community on the south east shores of Rest Lake and the outlet of the Manitowish River. > 1923 - Land speculation was common in the US and Northwoods in the 1920s. Winchester was also developing a similar planned community. Perkin's wife, Hattie, continued to advertise lots for sale as late as 1949. Included in this record is E.R. Perkin's 1945 obituary.

17. Fayette Buck obituary and photo of his second wife, Orpha Nokes Buck. 1964 - Fayette Buck 1874-1964. The Buck Family were pioneers in northern Wisconsin in the late 1800's. They owned and operated Buck's Spider Lake Resort in Manitowish Waters and the Divide Resort in Winchester. Fayette was quite a good woodsman in his younger years. MWHS archived several published articles about his Northwoods guiding and trapping adventures.

18. Frank & Olga Stenback, from Bessemer, MI, leased State of WI land on Rest Lake. 1920-1993 - The land was in Section 3, Lot 1 in what is referred to as Finn Bay. (Stenback and other lessor John Lahti immigrated to the US from Finland). The Stenbecks built two cottages and a sauna on the property and spent summers there. Frank tried to purchase the land for many years but the WI DNR was not interested in selling. Wisconsin terminated all leases of state land in 1954 however the Stenback family was granted extensions until 1972. Frank's daughters, Eila Stenback and Mrs. Helvi Serbin, lost the "battle" to purchase the property in 1976 but were given a lifetime lease by WI Governor Patrick Lucey. The cottages were eventually sold and moved. The land is now the Town of Manitowish Waters Serbin Park.

19. Haakenson's Resort ad and owner obituaries (1958 &1990) ca 1936- 1942 - John and Esther Haakenson built and operated Haakenson's Resort on the Rest Lake channel until 1942 when they sold it to George and Mabel Bazso. It was believed the cabins were built by Matt Plunkett.
