"Bob Town"- Picture of a boat house and boats most likely at one end of Richard Southgate's hand dug canals to/from his summer estate on Little Trout Lake. 1898 - "Bob Town" was named after Southgate's fishing guide, right hand man and caretaker, Robert "Bob" Loveless, who built the first few cabins at Southgate's summer estate on Little Trout Lake. The tall man standing in front might be Southgate.

  4. "Dam at Manitowish". Picture taken looking down river from the Rest Lake Dam. The logging camp in the background is the Chippewa Lumber and Boom Company. ca 1920s - Prior to 1904 this camp was owned by the Mississippi River Logging Co. Susan LaPorte first cooked at this lumber camp, probably in the 1890's. Susan's great-granddaughter, Ruthie Dickerson Gardner, recalls Susan relating a story about cleaning the cooking griddle with kerosene one day which started a fire and almost burned the building down.

"Hanson, DNR criticized for controversial removal of 'floating island'"- by Eric Johnson, reporter for The Lakeland Times 4/2008 - The Rest Lake floating island was removed via excavator in February 2008. The Wisconsin DNR approved the permit submitted by Town Chairman John Hanson. Area residents and Town Board Supervisors felt the removal was not properly discussed and decided prior to the action.

  12. "Keego" estate on Big Lake owned by prominent Chicago lumber merchant, A. Shreve Badger 1908-1929 - Possibly the first settlement on Big Lake <1893. Thought to have been previously owned by the Laflin family from Chicago. A.S. Badger sells the summer camp in 1929 to a group of Chicago businessmen, including Laurance Armour. They rename the property "Lake Keego" club.

"Log cabin scene Dam Lake-Manitowish Wisc-The Win-Mar" ca 1930s - Caption reads "Log cabin scene Dam Lake - Manitowish Wisc - The Win-Mar These buildings were located to the left of the Rest Lake dam, looking downstream. The buildings on the right in the photo were most likely part of the Mississippi River Logging Co prior to 1904, when the camp was sold to the Chippewa Lumber and Boom Co. In 1913 the property was then sold to the Chippewa Land and Improvement Company. The Win-Mar Resort had cabins here, both along the road as well as on Dam (Vance) Lake. (See Photos Catalog 2018.2.1 for another image of a cabin). The partial building shown in this image may be one of the cabins. The Pea Patch motel was eventually built on this site.

  16. "Olivida" was the Charles "Cap" Smith seasonal family property on Manitowish Lake. Built in 1917 it was used mainly for family and friends however it was opened to rental guests occasionally. 1917-1953 - "Olivida" is the name of Cap Smith's wife, Olive Ida. For a short time in the mid 1920s the property was called "Kamp Khaki" and rented out to tourists. After that it was also rented out under the name "Olivida". In 1941 several of the cabins were sold to the Hutter's who established "Lydia's Housekeeping Cottages".
