An excerpt from the American Angler magazine about Dan Devine guiding fishing parties from the Manitowish railroad station to Presque Isle Lake, via the Manitowish chain. 1896-97 - Devine would meet the fishermen at the Rest Lake dam and boat them to Clear Lake where they would travel via foot to Papoose Lake and then boat to Presque Isle Lake.

Harry and Alvena talk about their time owning Harry's Super Market in the Manitowish Waters/Boulder Junction area. He retired January 28, 1998 when the store was sold. He owned the store from 1957-1998. Harry also discusses his experiences with transporting eyes for the Lion's Eye Bank, his time hunting, fishing, trapping, and even dancing. 6. Article about traveling by canoe from Manitowish, WI to the Mississippi River. The group travels with Alexander Andrews from Manitowish, WI to the Rest Lake Dam and through the chain of lakes before heading downstream. 1905 - The clippings are from the Oshkosh Northwestern, authored by Edward B. Barr, the Northwestern Sportsman of Milwaukee. The author provides rich details of the Northwoods post Phase 1 logging and travelling the Flambeau River prior to the creation of the Turtle Flambeau Flowage. He discusses old logging camps and Rest Lake dam caretakers.

7. Arvid Seppala photos including an ad for Seppala's Cottages on Rest Lake. ca 1930s-1954 - Arvid lived on Rest Lake, current address 13828 Ilg Road (Long's). He was a mason and a guide. He would troll with silver spoon tackle and row all around Rest Lake. A frequent customer of his was Mr. Corson (owned what is now Murphy's, 6014 Zephyr Point Lane). Arvid was in charge of the timbers at the dam to control the lake level; he went through the dam twice!

10. "Birching in the Big Woods". The author recounts a 70 mile birch bark canoe route from the Land O' Lakes area to the railroad depot in Manitowish WI, passing through the Manitowish chain of lakes. 1890 - A series of four articles in Shields Magazine,written by G.O. Shields, titled "Birching in the Big Woods, detailing the author's October 1890 Northwoods fishing and hunting trip via birch bark canoe with guide E.M. Clark. The 70 mile wilderness water route started in the Land O' Lakes area and passed through Boulder Junction, Presque Isle and Manitowish Waters. The author writes about staying at a logging camp below the Rest Lake dam on their way down the Manitowish River to the train depot in Manitowish, WI. The articles discuss camping, hunting and the hardships of such an endeavor in 1890.

16. Fishing guide George LaPorte (right) with guest Fred Cassidy at Voss' Birchwood Lodge. ca 1945-1954 - Fred Cassidy from Indiana was a regular guest at the resort. George LaPorte (resort owner Ruth Voss' brother) was one of the resort guides whom guests would hire to have fishing success. Two men standing. One holds a fish. They stand in front of a pillar made of stone and wood. There is also a bit of a vehicle seen in the background.

20. Fishing guides Lloyd LaPorte and Richard Sleight, Sr.. ca 1950's - Lloyd LaPorte is on the left, Richard Sleight, Jr. on the right. They are displaying the day's catch at Voss' Birchwood Lodge. Notice the dinner bell in the background. The bell would ring to call guests to meals. It would ring for the employees first and then a bit later for the guests. Early on in the history of the resort it was tradition to also ring the bell when guest departed for home.
