"Big Development Around Rest Lake" 12/1928 Iron County Miner (Hurley, WI) - Lakeland Lands, Inc, managed by Morris Holzman of Eagle River, had land holdings in what is now downtown Manitowish Waters and on Rest Lake. In the 1920s they began selling the property for development and summer homes. The article discusses the building for the Northern Lights Hotel, Tower Tea Room and Schuster's Bakery.

3. Capt. Mikies Grubby Pub, aka, Capt. Mikies Pea Patch 1982-1983 - The Deckers continued to own the tavern but it was operated by Lorraine Decker's daughter and son-in-law for these two years.

4. Charley & Inez Pea's 1997 interview with Joyce Laabs of the Lakeland Times 1961-1979 - The Pea's purchased the Win-Mar tavern and seven cabins from the "Win-Mar girls" (Winnie Young and Marie Zimmerman) in 1961. By 1964 they changed the name to The Pea Patch.They sold the tavern in 1978 and by 1979 they also sold all but one of the cabins. In 1998 they sold the one remaining cabin and their home on Vance Lake to moved to Mississippi.

5. Decker's Pea Patch Tavern, aka, Pea Patch Bar & Grill 1978-1981 - John & Lorraine purchased the Pea Patch from Charley and Inez Pea in 1978. Free peanuts was a customer favorite!

6. Dick Hill's Blue Spruce Resort advertisement. 4/6/1956 - Richard C. Hill purchased the Win-Mar property in 1955 and re-named it. The cabins were located on Vance Lake.

10. Ehrich's Bavarian Inn 1973 - Some of the kitchen staff lodged in the cabin behind the restaurant; part of this building is visible in the picture. The Ehrich family had living quarters upstairs from the restaurant.

11. Fire destroys LaPorte's Shopping Center 6/30/1971 - The fire was ignited by a lightning strike to an electrical box located by the laundromat, behind the clothing store and barber shop. 16. LaPorte's first grocery store 1937-1946 - Established by George and Anna LaPorte. Expanded over the years to include gas pumps and fishing bait. Current address is 5995 County Highway W. Carlo, the family dog, was hit by cars several times.

LaPorte's Shopping Center 1947-2012 - George and Anna LaPorte built the downtown shopping center in 1947 to increase the size of their grocery store and provide additional retail space in Manitowish Waters. On 6/30/1971 the building was struck by lightning and was a total loss. the shopping center was quickly rebuilt and opened for business in the winter of 1972. In May of 2012 the center was sold to T. A. Solberg Co (aka Trig's).

18. LaPorte's Shopping Center after 1954 addition 1954-1962 - Jaeger's clothing store relocated to the new unit on south end of the building. Northwoods Liquors, owned by Cal & Jim LaPorte, opens in the vacated space. Bob Maletzke opens his barber shop. LaPorte's Laundromat opens on the south side of the building.

19. LaPorte's Shopping Center after 1971 fire 1972- late1980s - The shopping center re-opened in February 1972, seven months after fire destroyed the center. Tenants were LaPorte's IGA, Lakeland State Bank, Village Soda Grill, Clothes Tree (Bev Trapp and Marcia LaPorte). Accents 'En Fashion (Paula Chamberlain), Village Barber Shop (Dave Sorvald) and LaPorte's Laundromat.

20. LaPorte's Shopping Center and downtown area 1969-1971 - Jaeger's sold the clothing store to Winter's Resort Shop; Northwoods Liquors moved into LaPorte's IGA and Lakeland State Bank moves into the vacated unit. Marie's Soda Shop becomes the Village Soda Grill owned by Toni and Chello DalleAve. The Variety Store building changes to Larsen's Country Store.
