4. Cabins and buildings at the Win-Mar Resort. ca late 1920s - The resort was located on Vance Lake repurposing the old Chippewa Lumber and Boom Co logging camp buildings. One of the cabins was named "Brownie" possibly after guests the Brown family.

5. Charley & Inez Pea's 1997 interview with Joyce Laabs of the Lakeland Times 1961-1979 - The Pea's purchased the Win-Mar tavern and seven cabins from the "Win-Mar girls" (Winnie Young and Marie Zimmerman) in 1961. By 1964 they changed the name to The Pea Patch.They sold the tavern in 1978 and by 1979 they also sold all but one of the cabins. In 1998 they sold the one remaining cabin and their home on Vance Lake to moved to Mississippi.

6. Entrance to the "new" Win-Mar tavern August 1948 - This building was built after the original Win-Mar (located on the east or Rest Lake side of the highway) burned down in 1945. It was located on Dam (Vance) Lake. It was later moved uphill somewhat and enlarged into a tavern with living quarters. This structure is the bones for today's Pea Patch tavern. 1946, 47 or 48 Chrysler in the image.

"Log cabin scene Dam Lake-Manitowish Wisc-The Win-Mar" ca 1930s - Caption reads "Log cabin scene Dam Lake - Manitowish Wisc - The Win-Mar These buildings were located to the left of the Rest Lake dam, looking downstream. The buildings on the right in the photo were most likely part of the Mississippi River Logging Co prior to 1904, when the camp was sold to the Chippewa Lumber and Boom Co. In 1913 the property was then sold to the Chippewa Land and Improvement Company. The Win-Mar Resort had cabins here, both along the road as well as on Dam (Vance) Lake. (See Photos Catalog 2018.2.1 for another image of a cabin). The partial building shown in this image may be one of the cabins. The Pea Patch motel was eventually built on this site.

9. Marie Zimmerman and Winnie Young behind the Win-Mar bar serving cake to newlywed guests Alan "Jud" and Irma Judkins. 1949 - This would have been the Win-Mar tavern rebuilt after the 1945 fire, now located on Vance Lake. Attached to the ceiling are neckties-- any man that entered the Win-Mar overdressed suffered the loss of his tie. It was cut off, shame-labeled with his name and hung from the ceiling.

11. Old logging camp on Vance Lake below the dam. ca 1890s-1920s - This camp was first owned by the Mississippi River Logging Company and later by the Chippewa Lumber & Boom Co., both of which were controlled by Frederic Weyerhaeusar. After river logging ended around 1906, this property sat vacant. In the 1920's it became part of the Win-Mar resort, shop and restaurant.

12. Photo album of Jack Hanson showing what teenagers did for fun 1953-1954 - Boating was a significant summer pastime as was tobogganing in the winter. Climbing the Rest Lake fire tower was a must! Jack lived in Manitowish Waters for a short time as a teenager. He passed these photos along to John Hanson (no relation).
