4. Newspaper clipping from the Montreal River Miner announcing the Town of Spider Lake officially changing its name to the Town of Manitowish Waters. 12/29/1939 - One impetus for this change was residents wanting a local Post Office. Previously, the mailing address for our area was Manitowish, WI in Iron County. Per local lore, Rubin Oberg and Palmer Hanson were instrumental in selecting Manitowish Waters as the new name.

5. Several images of the fish hatchery below Rest Lake dam. Fish hatchery building. Picture taken from on top of Rest Lake dam, looking downstream toward Vance Lake. ca 1932-1960 - The fish hatchery, located just below the Rest Lake dam, was one of the few municipal owned hatcheries in the state of Wisconsin. Note the "fish lock" that can be seen in some of the photos to the right of the dam on the downstream side. The lock was to provide fish a way to get from the Manitowish River up to Rest Lake. It served as a model for other such structures in the state.

6. Vilas County Board Resolution to change the town name from Spider Lake to Manitowish Waters 11/14/1939 - As documented in the county resolution, the Town of Spider Lake Board of Directors unanimously adopted to change the town name on 11/13/1939. Included is a cover letter notifying the Wisconsin Secretary of State of this change.
