1. Article about Chicago artist Frances Badger--her connection to the Northwoods and Big Lake and her paintings of Ojibwa harvesting wild rice. 1908-1930s - Ms. Badger was employed as part of Franklin D. Roosevelt's Work Progress Administration to paint murals of American life. MWHS purchased two prints of her paintings of Ojibwa harvesting wild rice on Rice Creek near her family's estate, Keego Lodge, on Big Lake. 5. Forest Fires seen near Manitowish, WI. Summer 1933 - Over 100 fires were burning in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and northern Wisconsin. Careless smokers and berry pickers neglecting to extinguish campfires were to blame. The drought of 1933-1934 created terrible forest fires in the Northwoods. Fire suppression was most difficult and the newly created CCC at Camp Mercer helped a great deal, but 600-700 men hat to fight the 1933 fires. Manitowish Waters was barely saved in both 1933 and 1934. During the "smaller" fires of 1934, Camp Mercer dedicated 36,000 man hours to fire fighting.

Jim Bokern's 1987 master thesis on "The history and primary canoe routes of the six Chippewa Bands from the Lac du Flambeau district". 1600-1900 - The canoe routes, trails, portages and Ojibwe villages are documented throughout the paper. Ojibwe warfare, seasonal rounds and citations supporting these activities are highlights of the research shared.

11. John Nutter- brief history of his life and property in the Northwoods 1883-1984 - Nutters owed property along the Manitowish River at the intersection of Highway 51 and 47. In 1984 their granddaughter, Mary Burns Bates took ownership of it. In the early 1900s John was a part owner in a "halfway" house (lodging between two towns) located on the south side of the intersection of County Roads W and K.

15. School in Manitowish, WI ca early 1900s - The first school was built in 1892. A new building was built in 1908 after fire destroyed the original school. It was located along today's Highway 51, just south of the intersection with Highway 47. It is still a private residence in 2025.

19. The Gleam (Manitowish School newspaper) pg 5- A club is formed to better the interests of the school. 1925 - The Wisconsin Club's purpose is to fulfill the interest of the school. Also reported in news of John Nutter improving his farm on the Manitowish River and named Rest Haven and on May 1 the Manitowish School played the Rest Lake School in a volleyball match.
