Article about Chicago artist Frances Badger--her connection to the Northwoods and Big Lake and her paintings of Ojibwa harvesting wild rice. 1908-1930s - Ms. Badger was employed as part of Franklin D. Roosevelt's Work Progress Administration to paint murals of American life. MWHS purchased two prints of her paintings of Ojibwa harvesting wild rice on Rice Creek near her family's estate, Keego Lodge, on Big Lake. 3. Cabins at Keego Lodge on Big Lake ca 1950s - The first settlement on Big Lake, this property changed hands many times, was even a girl's camp for a bit. Rybergs owned it from 1945-1955 when they sold the resort to the Fehners who operated it until 1969.

4. "Keego" estate on Big Lake owned by prominent Chicago lumber merchant, A. Shreve Badger 1908-1929 - Possibly the first settlement on Big Lake <1893. Thought to have been previously owned by the Laflin family from Chicago. A.S. Badger sells the summer camp in 1929 to a group of Chicago businessmen, including Laurance Armour. They rename the property "Lake Keego" club.

5. "Keego Lodge- an Era Ends" by reporter Liza Tuttle- North Star Journal 8/14/1985 - Believed to be the first settlement on Big Lake ca 1890. It was a private hunting and fishing club or estate into the 1940s. The property included a girls camp for a short time, ca 1917 into the 1920s

6. Keego Lodge on Big Lake ca 1945-1969 - Pictures from Densing photo album. They include images of the main lodge, cabins, lake front, Keego Lake and Rice Creek. Two resort brochures with a property map are included. The resort was owned by Moose Ryberg 1945-1955 and then the Fehner's until 1969. Plumbing was installed after WW II.

7. News clipping about A. Shreve Badger selling the family "camp" on Big Lake. 1929 - The property was sold to a group of prominent Chicago business men to be used as a family fishing and hunting camp and an escape from the city heat for their family and friends. They re-named it The Keego Club. They owned it for ten or so years. Laurence Armour was one of the owners; the property was later referred to as the "Armour estate". Another owner was John R. Winterbotham, father-in-law to A. Shreve's son, Shreve C. Badger.

10. The Alpheus Shreve Badger family on their dock with the gazebo. Big Lake. ca 1910 - Originally named Tamaracks Mrs. Badger, from Kenilworth, IL, renamed the estate Keego Lodge when purchased in 1908. The young girl in front is the artist Frances Badger. Her parents are on the right in the photo. Mrs. Blackwell is the other women standing behind Frances; her husband is in the back.
