11. Portrait of Edward Merriam (E.M.) Griffith ca 1910s - Griffith was Wisconsin's first state forester, 1904-1915. 1898 USDA hired Griffith to promote the concept of managing national forests. His Wisconsin program included the control of forest fires, acquisition of land for Forest Preserve, protection of the headwaters of the streams flowing into the Mississippi River and Lake Superior and the advancement of Forestry in the state. He was a leader in the field of Forestry and stressed the influences the forests have on the waters of the state.
