8. Abstract for the northwest 1/4 of the south-east quarter of Section 36 Township 42 Range 5E, specifically a portion of the Trout River between Alder and Wild Rice Lakes. 1872-1977 - The property had several individual owners until 1889 when purchased by the Dells Lumber (and Shingle) Company. Timber rights were sold to the Flambeau Lumber Co. in 1901. Dell Lumber sold the entire north 1/2 of the SE 1/4 to Richard Southgate in 1910. Wife Ella inherits the property which passes to her second husband Jacob E Himes in 1923. Himes loses the property; a sheriff's sale in 1929 show it is purchased by the Aid Association for Lutherans. In 1946 Harold and Clara Vorreyer purchase the NW 1/4 of the SE 1/4. The Vorreyer family sold it to Donald and Anne Marie Jaroch in 1965 and 1973.

11. Accomplished violinist, Manitowish resident, Anna May LaPorte. 1922- ca 1980s - Anna May was educated and trained on the violin. She lived in Texas, Memphis and Milwaukee before moving to northern Wisconsin. She performed around the area and played in a band called the Rhythm Queen with sisters Geraldine and Phylis Andrews. The sign on the parade float says "Kitchen Band" although this band was a different Manitowish Waters group. The float was sponsored by the Greenhouse in Manitowish owned Ralph & Mabel Gaulke. Their son Harlan is pictured sitting next to Anna Mae.

Article about Chicago artist Frances Badger--her connection to the Northwoods and Big Lake and her paintings of Ojibwa harvesting wild rice. 1908-1930s - Ms. Badger was employed as part of Franklin D. Roosevelt's Work Progress Administration to paint murals of American life. MWHS purchased two prints of her paintings of Ojibwa harvesting wild rice on Rice Creek near her family's estate, Keego Lodge, on Big Lake.
