"In the Heart of the Wild Woods" is a two part article recounting the author's adventurous hunting trip on Big Lake and the surrounding area with guides Peter Vance and Joe LaVigne. 1899 - Two articles titled "In the Heart of the Wild Woods" and published in the January 1900 edition of Forest and Stream magazine, recounting the author's adventurous deer hunting trip in the Big and Clear Lake area in late October 1899. The guides for the trip were Peter Vance and Joe LaVigne.

10. Joe Ilg Sr. family photos from Rest Lake ca 1902-1915 - Joe Ilg Sr. first came to Rest Lake in 1891. He married Leonore in 1898. They camped on the river at Reed's house (relatives of Leonore). They later camped on the site of the boat landing by the dam, which become the site of the Northern Lights Hotel in the late 1920s. In about 1915 they purchased their resort property down the shore to the east.

13. Mrs. Emma Andrews tells of Early Days 11/1962 - Emma celebrated her 97th birthday. Many local residents attended. She recounted what the Manitowish area was like in the early days. At the time Mercer did not exist and the logging industry was large. She watched logs sluice through the rivers followed by a wanigan (floating cook shanty). Includes her 1965 obituary.

15. Peter Vance at his homestead on Vance Lake. circa mid to late 1880's - Peter Vance at his homestead on Vance Lake. He was a guide, cruiser and pioneer. He was with a group that paddled up the Chippewa River, up the Flambeau River to the Manitowish River in August 1884. Historians claim him to be the first white man to establish a residence in the Manitowish Waters area.
