  3. Chain-O'-Lakes Lodge on Alder Lake. 1938-1944 - Owned by Mr. & Mrs. Edmund Kmentt of Chicago, IL until 1944 when sold to Mr. & Mrs. Edward Scotten, also from Chicago. The property name was then changed to Alderwood Lodge. Kmentts stayed active in the community and continued to live on Alder Lake. They opened Lakeland Sporting Goods retail shop in the late 1940s.

  4. Fire destroys LaPorte's Shopping Center 6/30/1971 - The fire was ignited by a lightning strike to an electrical box located by the laundromat, behind the clothing store and barber shop. Included is a link to a GrocerGram trade magazine article which discusses the fire and business interruption insurance.

  5. Hill's Archery Supplies catalog featuring the Hlll's Hornet a 3 bladed broadhead. 1955 - This was a wholesale and retail business owned and operated by the Hill family. It was located at what today is 4795 Lavigne Road (Jim Bokern property). Attached are images of arrow head molds/dies and broadheads.

History of Manitowish Waters narrative from 1965-1972 Chamber of Commerce guides and an updated page 3 published in the 1973-78 guides. - Written by historian Michael Dunn III, this narrative covers the area's history from the Ojibwe inhabitants to fur trading, logging, railroads, establishment of the Town and services, development of tourism, resorts, recreation, schools, retail and manufacturing, all in 3 pages! Also attached is page 3 from 1979-1986 published narrative with added images of the airport and Fire Department.

  8. Karth's Korner 1958 - A bait, tackle and gift shop located next to Ehlert's Grocery store on Highway 51. Owned by Ann & Fritz Karth. This was the only year ads could be found for this business, though they were in business longer.

LaPorte's Shopping Center 1947-2012 - George and Anna LaPorte built the downtown shopping center in 1947 to increase the size of their grocery store and provide additional retail space in Manitowish Waters. On 6/30/1971 the building was struck by lightning and was a total loss. the shopping center was quickly rebuilt and opened for business in the winter of 1972. In May of 2012 the center was sold to T. A. Solberg Co (aka Trig's).

  10. LaPorte's Shopping Center after 1954 addition 1954-1962 - Jaeger's clothing store relocated to the new unit on south end of the building. Northwoods Liquors, owned by Cal & Jim LaPorte, opens in the vacated space. Bob Maletzke opens his barber shop. LaPorte's Laundromat opens on the south side of the building.

  11. LaPorte's Shopping Center after 1971 fire 1972- late1980s - The shopping center re-opened in February 1972, seven months after fire destroyed the center. Tenants were LaPorte's IGA, Lakeland State Bank, Village Soda Grill, Clothes Tree (Bev Trapp and Marcia LaPorte). Accents 'En Fashion (Paula Chamberlain), Village Barber Shop (Dave Sorvald) and LaPorte's Laundromat.

LaPorte's Shopping Center and downtown area 1969-1971 - Jaeger's sold the clothing store to Winter's Resort Shop; Northwoods Liquors moved into LaPorte's IGA and Lakeland State Bank moves into the vacated unit. Marie's Soda Shop becomes the Village Soda Grill owned by Toni and Chello DalleAve. The Variety Store building changes to Larsen's Country Store.

  13. LaPorte's Shopping Center, downtown Manitowish Waters 1950-52 - Jaeger's clothing store a new tenant replacing Bill Bart's Rest Lake Refrigeration, Radio and Electric. The small house on the right of the first picture is the home of Susan LaPorte, George's mother. Note Cal LaPorte's white weather station box is visible behind the building, on the left side.

  14. LaPorte's Shopping Center, downtown, built in 1946-1947 - The bricks used in the building were repurposed from Silver Street in Hurley, WI. The tenants were LaPorte's Market (owners of the building), Marie's Soda Shop (owned by Marie LaPorte,wife of George's cousin Don) and Rest Lake Refrigeration, Radio and Electric,owned by Dorothy LaPorte Bart's husband Bill.

  15. Lakeland Sporting Goods advertisement in the MW Chamber of Commerce guide. 1948 - Established by Edmund and Helen Kmentt after selling their Alder Lake resort. The building has an "Information" sign so it may have served as an unofficial Chamber of Commerce location. By the 1950s the Burich family lived in the building and the official Chamber office was located there. Current address for this location 5301 US Highway 51 S.

  17. Old Settler's Inn at Voss' Birchwood Lodge - This building is located along Highway 51. Voss' Coffee Shop and soda fountain, the old Voss' bar and several retail shops were housed here.
